Soy wax candles have taken the world by storm, and for good reason. Not only are they eco-friendly, but they also burn cleaner and last longer than traditional paraffin wax candles. Additionally, the soy wax community is constantly innovating and creating new types of soy wax blends to cater to different candle-making needs.
If you’re new to the soy wax game, you might be wondering what the difference is between the various soy wax blends out there. In this post, we’ll be focusing on the popular Golden Wax: GW464, GW415, GW5715, and GW416. We’ll take a look at the properties and benefits of each wax blend, and explain the best ways to use them when making container candles and tart melts.
GOLDEN WAX 464
GW-464 is one of the most popular soy wax blends for container candles. It’s made from pure soybean oil and has a smooth, creamy appearance. It has excellent hot and cold scent throw, and its burn quality is top-notch. It is also regarded as the easiest of the soy waxes to use when making soy container candles. This soy wax also has excellent glass adhesion properties allowing you to use a clear glass candle jar. As with all natural soy waxes frosting can be an issue but GW464 contains a natural soy-based additive which enables the soy to be poured at a hotter temperature reducing frosting and increasing fragrance load.
It’s also a natural plant based wax that is GMO FREE and contains NO paraffin, NO unnatural additives and is also VEGAN and KOSHER.
Benefits include:
- Excellent hot and cold scent throw
- Reduced set-up time
- Great glass adhesion
- Easy to mix with a range of vibrant coloured dyes
- Compatible with standard candle making equipment including the Candle Maker
- Versatile and adaptable, for easily customizable blends
- Comes in easy to weigh flakes
- Good burn quality
When making container candles with GW464, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Heat the wax by melting it slowly and gently, and avoid overheating it. Pour the wax at around 62 degrees celsius and allow it to cool down slowly to room temperature. Use a high-quality fragrance oil, making sure not to exceed the recommended fragrance load – we recommend 10% of the volume of your jar!
GOLDEN WAX 415
GW415 is a pure soy wax made from soybeans that have been hydrogenated and it contains no additives and is both natural and kosher. This soy wax is good for blending with beeswax, paraffin, palm and micro crystalline waxes. It has an excellent scent throw and can take a higher fragrance load, providing a long-lasting scent when lit. This wax can be harder to master but it is the best choice for blending and for those looking for a plain soy wax with no additives at all.
Benefits include:
• Superior fragrance retention
• Clean burning
• Excellent adhesion to jars
• Clean and easy to use
• Perfect for blending with other waxes
GOLDEN WAX 5715 & 416
GW-5715 is a specialised wax developed for making soy melts using clamshell and tart moulds. The 5715 botanical-based wax blend should be used alone so there is no need to add any universal additives or other non plant based waxes as it has a great mold release on its own. It also creates a wonderful fragrance throw that is comparable with paraffin based waxes. This wax also melts and sets quickly, making it easy to produce large batches of tart melts in a short amount of time.
Benefits include:
• Offers significant bloom/frost reduction
• Melts and sets quickly which is good for large batches
• Great mould release
• Creates a fragrance throw comparable to paraffin
• Allows for the addition of vibrant colours
GW-416 is also used in making soy melts but you will need to add in 10% of our specially formulated Universal Additive to help it pop out of the mould. This wax can also be used to harden other waxes.
Both waxes are a natural plant based wax that is GMO FREE and contains NO paraffin, NO unnatural additives.
When making tart melts with these waxes, it’s important to use a quality fragrance oil that is specifically formulated for wax melts. Wax melts often require a slightly higher fragrance load than container candles, so you’ll need to experiment with different ratios to find the perfect balance.
Soy wax blending is a constantly evolving and exciting process. Each soy wax blend has its unique properties and benefits, making it important to understand which wax is best for your specific needs. Whether you’re making container candles or tart melts, choosing the right soy wax blend can make all the difference in the quality of your end product. With a little practice and experimentation, you’ll be crafting beautiful, eco-friendly soy wax creations in no time!
